An outfit without a handbag is like a stage without a spotlight. The ubiquitous bag has become so integral to the details of an ensemble, a collaboration between the two wasn't only to be expected - it was anticipated.
New York-based designer Alexander Berardi joined Canadian handbag creator Jessica Jensen for a Tuesday evening show at Toronto Fashion Week to show off their take on summer style.
Bags came in all shapes in sizes, including clutches with feather details, box satchels given a touch of ribbon and weekenders composed of woven leather with a hanging scarf to match.
On the clothes side, breezy dresses with capelet swaths draped over the shoulders showed in sweet dotted patterns, while tulip skirts reminiscent of curtains showed off blush-worthy slits.
Nautical details appeared in sailor's stripes and knotted rope belts, evoking the "Tribe called Hamptons" notion for which the collection was named. While many of looks were simply darling, a slinky backless jumpsuit in a midnight blue took the collection from day to night.
A golden gown with a low-hanging cowl neckline was last to shimmy onto the runway, showing that this line is not just sweet - it's seductive.
