Kate Middleton’s style could be the new black. The elegant future queen tipped to be the next people’s princess is expected to influence fashion around the world. Fashion researcher Professor Jennifer Craik, who teaches fashion at the Canberra Institute of Technology expects elements of Miss Middleton’s style – which she called “pared back” and almost minimalist – would soon be seen on Australian streets.

“She [Miss Middleton] knows fashion, she has a sense of style and because of the occasion, these things will contribute to her becoming quite an important trendsetter,” Professor Craik said. “There’s no doubt her look will get picked up ... for corporate wear, for evening wear, for club wear.’

Myer business manager for fashion and accessories Judy Coomber likewise expected Miss Middleton to infl uence fashion “in subtle ways”. “Her particular elegance and style will be infl uential to buyers. It might change what labels and looks customers wear. “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look like Kate. She has an elegant style and gives a level of aspiration to a look that is contained and refi ned.’’

Target business manager of ladieswear Karen Russell said there was no doubt Miss Middleton’s classic look would impact on sales across winter looks including coats, boots and accessories, in particular, scarves and hats.

“Kate has a simple elegance that Australian women can easily emulate and her selection of classic tailored pieces can work back with key season trends.”The one thing in Miss Middleton’s closet attracting fervent interest like no other is her wedding gown.

Australian bridal gown designer Leonard Derecourt, who trained in the tradition of French couturiers, expects his clients will fall in love with it. “There will be something about it that will make every woman say, ‘I love this part of it, can it be made part of my gown?’ ”
