In honor of its 50th anniversary, the Council of Fashion Designers of America is honoring Rei Kawakubo, the elusive designer of Comme des Garçons, with its prestigious International Award. “We wanted someone who had a real impact in fashion everywhere,” says designer and CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg (who is also the wife of Barry Diller, chairman of IAC, an owner of The Newsweek/Daily Beast Company.) “Rei came up naturally and it was a unanimous choice. Her originality, her non-compromise is inspiring, and more important, has been truly influential.”
