Is the Mangalore airport inherently flawed? Should the airport be relocated owing to natural risks? Aerospace experts say flat terrain should be the first choice for an airport and table-top runways only in an “absolute no-choice situation”.
NEW DELHI: The Air India Express Boeing that crashed in Mangalore on Saturday veered off the runway after missing the landing threshold — an error that rarely causes a crash. In this case it did because of the runway’s unusual configuration. The airstrip sits on a plateau making landing a test of any pilot’s skill.
A strip longer than 8,000ft is not possible at Bajpe. Second, the runway width does not fulfil regulations. From its centrepoint, the runway should be 150metres wide on either side, which adds up to 300 metres, while the strip at Bajpe is 100metres each. The width is recommended by International Civil Aviation Organisation document, said to be the “Bible for runway construction”.

A runway (RWY) is a strip of land at an airport on which aircraft can take off and land and forms part of the maneuvering area. Runways may be a man-made surface (often asphalt, concrete, or a mixture of both) or a natural surface (grass, dirt, gravel, ice, or salt).
The moment of truth arrives for finalist designer, Seth Aaron Henderson as he sends his collection down the runway at New York Fashion Week to compete to win, in this scene from the season finale of “Project Runway” Season 7.
Project Runway is not your usual “reality” television program. Unlike most shows today, where the characters are either straight out of the local Wal Mart or straight out of acting school, the Project Runway cast comes off polished, but not fake. Funny, but not forced. Combine that with the excellent editing by the producers, you get entertainment that you eagerly look forward to week after week. The “challenges” for each week are not nearly as interesting as the comedic outbursts and bizarre dialogue that goes on between the contestants.
